Walter de las Casas
Distinguished Poet

Walter de las Casas was born in Havana, Cuba. There he attended Columbus School where he learned English. In the United States he went Holy Cross Elementary School where in the eighth grade he received the trophy for General Excellence. H attended Power Memorial Academy where he placed seventh among the graduates. Mr. de las Casas attended Iona College in New Rochelle where earned his B. A with cum laude honors in French and Spanish. He received his M.A. from Hunter College in New York City. While attending Hunter College, Mr. de las Casa taught at the elementary, middle school, junior high school and senior high school levels. He taught a total of sixteen years at Sarah J. Hale High School.
He taught Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, and bilingual classes in mathematics, algebra, general science, biology and social studies. Mr. de las Casa has written poetry since his junior year in college. He came to write poetry thusly. He was in the New York University area to sign up for a Continuing Education course in Portuguese and was approached by a girl who offered him a Scientology pamphlet saying to him, "This is for you." He, then, began his first poem, "My verses are for you." Although his first poems were written in English, his first two poetry books were written in Spanish, La ninex que dilate and Libido. His first English book was Tributes followed by Discourse and Human. Mr. de las Casas recently received copies of his latest book, Hojas dipersas. Mr. de las Casas currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
